Varsity girls basketball drops opener in disappointing fashion

by Eva Gucker

The Pittsford girls varsity basketball team started out their season poorly with a big 51-19 loss to the defending SCAA league champion Jackson Christian Royals. From the beginning of the game the girls had troubles with missed shots and turnovers, and they ended the first quarter behind by a 20-0 score. Although the lead increased by the end of the game, the team’s play did pick up in later quarters. Execution of the offense improved and allowed some scoring opportunities. “We didn’t finish our plays, but there were opportunities there,” said junior Ashley Buckner. The girls also made big improvements when working through JC’s full-court press and half-court traps. Even though the margin was lopsided, the girls have positives to take from the game and know that they were effective in some key areas; they just need to finish plays.
